Finland’s government is finalizing a long-prepared legislative proposal concerning the use of technology in social care, including elderly care.

MariCare has submitted a written statement on the proposal to the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. In our statement, we particularly emphasize the importance of risk-based regulation and the need to assess imaging and non-imaging technologies based on their actual impact and the privacy risks they pose.

“A significant proportion of falls among older people and people with reduced functional ability occur in bathrooms and toilets. If the use of technology in these spaces is completely restricted, we lose the opportunity to detect dangerous situations at an early stage,” says Mervi Peltonen of MariCare in an article (In Finnish) by the Finnish news agency STT, published by several media outlets.

Sensor technology enables movement, activity, and unusual events to be monitored without video or cameras. This makes it possible to identify potential risks and support care work while preserving residents’ privacy.
